    Home automation for Dummies

"The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function." -Albert Bartlett http://www.nngroup.com/articles/nielsens-law-of-internet-bandwidth/ According to that article all our wiring is going to be slow in 10 years, I like the idea about doing...

    Elk Installation

I didn't realize that cat5 will run gigabit, oh well I guess I am somewhat future proofed. I have wireless B/G and Wireless N in the home and I really love the speed/latency of wired ethernet vs. wireless.

    Four Speakers

I ended up using an 8 ohm and 32 ohm speaker in parallel. Calculated 6.4 ohms and also measured 6.4 ohms with a multimeter. Audio sounded a lot better than just the 8 ohm unit by itself leading me to believe that less ohms is better for sound quality (staying above 4 ohms of course).

Simple way to view IP Cameras on TV

I use BlueCherry DVR to record/access/distribute my analog video streams. (They have a java client for linux/mac/windows). I can then access my cameras via IP Cam Viewer (pro/lite/basic versions work) on my Logitech Revue Google TV (no need to switch inputs, I just hit search on the keyboard...

    Elk Installation

Cat6 for all your computers as well. Gigabit ethernet is a lot nicer than wireless for your tv/internet/voip etc. Like Lou said, bite the bullet and run the wires before sheetrock goes in...it is less time consuming overall.

    Monitoring - NextAlarm/AlarmRelay

Does anyone know if a tech on-site is required for the setup of the system? I also understand that they do not do heartbeat monitoring however I was thinking of setting up a system locally (LAN) to verify pings from a server to the XEP and then using an outside server (WAN) to verify the...

    Elk M1 and IP Monitoring

Has anyone found a suitable solution for IP monitoring? I was in contact today with AlarmRelay and they stated that their systems can receive communication from the Elk M1 but cannot supervise it. Is M1XEP supervision possible with the DSC Surguard? Have the Osborne-Hoffman systems been...

    Elk and monitored services?

If you are still in the process of building I personally would run wires to every door and window (4 wire 22 gauge I think is the way to wire up sensors), every location you might put a glass break or motion sensor, cat6 to all locations for security cameras, cat6 to all high speed low latency...

alarm monitoring - phone line or internet?

Ok, so I just talked to some lady from AlarmRelay.com and she stated that they do not have the equipment to heartbeat (ping) monitor the Elk M1XEP. Does she not know what she is talking about or what? I tend to believe you guys but don't want to spend money on their service if they do not in...

    False Alarm Help...

I believe the pet immune sensors work by restricting the back some distance off the floor. Perhaps restricting restricting the dog from the couch could help.
