Another question.   As I'm trying to figure out what devices to get, is there an easy way to do this?  Perhaps a list somewhere of like best and budget dimmer switches?   Well, I've figured out my switches, but now I'm feeling overwhelmed with other devices like doorbell and thermostat and door...

  Any recommendations on a z-wave thermostat?   Also, are there any DIY security systems?  Or do I have to contract out with a company and do monitoring (and pay their fee)?

This may be a dumb question, but if you have recessed lights and a ceiling fan without a light, don't you get a strobe light effect b/c the lights are behind the fan?  (Clearly not right behind the fan, but even if they're off to the side?)

Oh!  Or should I try to get ceiling fans without lights?  Would that make sense/make things easier/less expensive?

What does it mean about instant status and mini-controller?  And can I use the Levitron for the fan control and GE for other lights?

Thanks, Dean.  Based on what I've already posted in this thread, what controller would you recommend.  It sounded like Mi Casa Vera was the recommended choice for me and having a Windows 8 app seemed to be the icing on the cake.  But I'd like to hear what you'd recommend.

Oh!  The MiCasa has a Windows 8 phone app.  I think we have a winner for controller!!

For the software-based controller, I need to have a computer at home, on all the time, right?  We currently only have our work laptops and an ancient laptop (running like windows 97 or something).  Would it be worth buying a cheap computer for home, or should we just go with the hardware one?
