    smoke detector wiring

Thanks for the clarification, it had been hard to do research because of my work schedule this last week. I mentioned the 350 because it keeps coming up in the search, but really I'm trying to get a feel for what I'm getting into before I start running wire. This is a retrofit application so...

    smoke detector wiring

I have been searching the site, and probably have made this overly complicated in my head, but I can't find a definitive answer for my smoke detector wiring. This will be a 4-wire setup using 18/4 FPL wire. I'm thinking of using GE 350 and GE 350CX for my smokes. Will I still need the...

Thanks for the reply BraveSirRobbin. Everything makes sense now.

    wiring methods

That I understand. My only remaining question is if I punch down my "drop" to a telephone distribution module, can that line only be used for telephone then. If so, would it be better to run all "drops" to patch panel for data and then patch from that to phone distribution when needed? Also...

    wiring methods

Frederick, I am planning about 4 wires to each room. It was (may be) more since I was planning 4 for data/misc. and 1 or 2 for phone depending on the room. I have about 50 home runs (i think that is the correct term) planned at this time. I will start running them in the next month or so...

    wiring methods

I am setting up to start wiring the house. I think I have patch panel use understood. Network -> Switch -> patch panels -> wall jacks around the house. I also was wondering about routing incoming phone lines through a patch panel. Such as, Incoming phone -> phone distribution block ->...

Structured wiring can compatability/On-Q ethernet depth

Try coating the drill bit with vaseline. I use this on the car when drilling near carburetor intakes or spark plug holes. The bits of metal will stick to the vaseline. Just remember to use a low speed drill.

    m1xep enrollment with kp2

This is my first time setting this up and I have the basics done. M1 gold setup, 2 zones are connected and working. The Keypad seems to work fine. I only have one keypad connected at this time. I am trying to add the m1xep ethernet adaptor. I have it connected via the serial cable. Power...

    wiring closet

This is probably off topic, but how did you calculate circuit need for the new panel. I have a 200 amp panel, but think that the long term plan will require larger. Who should I contact to determine if I can add another sub-panel to accomodate? Right now I have about 8 open slots in the...

Getting started with Elk m1 Gold

This is a load bearing wall, so a 2x6 wall will require complete reframing while suppporting floor above. I'll have to think about the 2x2's. I was hoping just to finish this closet for the time being, but it looks more and more like I will have to start a full master plan for the basement as...

Getting started with Elk m1 Gold

I might be able to increase the wall size. I haven't measured the room yet, but it is under the basement stairs. I roughed in the door opening on monday, and I'm working out issues with power and lighting for the space right now. Anyways, since the room is as narrow as the basement stairs...

    wiring closet

I am setting up the equipment room for the non mechanical aspects of the house. Does anyone have any suggestions for this space? Such as putting the room on its own circuit? How many outlets do you typically have / need for futureproofing? I am planning on housing an Elk M1G system...

Getting started with Elk m1 Gold

Actually, I'm hoping to mount between the studs. I guess if I do so, I can offset the can to get an inch or two behind it in case I need to mount on the wall behind the can. The room for my equipment is underneath the basement stairs and will also be containing home theater and server...

Getting started with Elk m1 Gold

Thanks for all the replies. The M1 system has been purchased and I will figure out lighting needs later. I also bought a 42" can to fit future expansion as well as the ethernet port to start running all the keypads. I have about 5 or 6 spots I would want a keypad. I eventually hope to make...

Getting started with Elk m1 Gold

Forgot to ask and I still don't know how to edit on this forum. I would like to do most (all) programming and setup with an attached computer rather than through keypads and such. What should I be getting to do this? I also found the google spreadsheet comparison of HA systems. Good show for...
