Correct, on the Insteon KPLs the load is always either the big buttons or button #1 (top left button).

One trick you could do is put the KPL in 8 button mode but still use the 6 button faceplate. This kinda lets you use the big buttons as discrete buttons (as long as you weren't using a load). There are some problems with this that might have to be worked out with either some button linking or...
