    Home automation DIY project

We'll just have to agree to disagree. We have a ton of Insteon users which don't experience the same kinds of persistent errors you're describing. Sometimes it does require troubleshooting to find the issue and that can be time consuming, but trust me when I say that adding even more retries...

    Home automation DIY project

How so? Insteon has built-in retries (at the protocol level) so if a failure comes back from the PowerLinc then retries have already taken place.

    Considering OpenHAB any other contenders?

Actually, we've had very few requests for UPB (fewer than 25 - we keep counts) and even fewer for the OMNI. I don't believe UPB ever reached critical mass really, though reliable market share numbers are difficult to find. We do, in fact, natively support INSTEON and Z-Wave, both of which are...

    Soap - Multi-network Android-based router

This does not pass the smell test in any way...

    SmartThings and Revolv programmability

SmartThings definitely requires an internet connection to work - the hardware just passes all data up to the "cloud" where the actual logic processing takes place. The Revolv is less clear - it apparently does need a network connection but it seems that it should be able to do it's thing locally.

    110V Smokes

Yep, I agree that it's likely local building code. I had the same issue when building my house 10 years ago.

Off-The-Shelf home automation with DIY options?

If you're a Mac user, our software Indigo supports INSTEON and Z-Wave natively (plus a boatload of plugins for other stuff) and we have a really simple plugin API that would allow you to integrate your own devices.   Not sure if that's what you were looking for or not.

Honeywell Announces Cloud API Program for its Wi-Fi Thermostats

LOL - it's almost as if these hardware guys think we WANT cloud-based APIs...   Here's a hint: we don't. Let us talk directly to the hardware and we're good.   Guess for them it's a better customer lock-in if they are dependent on their cloud-based services. I think it's a big mistake in the...

About to choose a protocol, controller, and switches... zwave?

You won't be able to roll-your-own software and control Z-Wave locks. That part of the API is very closely guarded and requires $$ and onerous certification requirements to get. So you'll need to go with a commercial solution that has implemented lock support.

Options for a Wireless Security System now + Insteon later

You have a couple of options: buy a security system that can directly talk to INSTEON or buy a security system that can communicate with some home automation controller that can also talk INSTEON.   The former may seem more convenient but they also tend to be less flexible over the long term. If...

ZigBee Pro HA Cert. dimmer switch?

Thus the problem with ZigBee HA. I really hope availability of devices gets better sooner rather than later as I think it's a better protocol than the competition.

    Future of HA lighting

Disadvantages: change the wiring in your house so switches don't actually control the load but rather just send signals to something (the bulb or a central controller). I suppose this is practical, and it is (sorta) the way the old hard-wired systems worked, but I'm not convinced this is the...

    These look interesting

There's been a 3rd party plugin to control the Hue lights from Indigo for some time now. The developer confirmed that he's already basically using the newly published API (it had already been reverse engineered). We have several users using them and they seem pleased so far.

Looking to get ELK for Security to use alongside Indigo/Insteon Automation

For the questions about the Elk plugin and Indigo, I'd suggest posting on the plugin's thread created by the plugin developer over on our forums - the developer or one of the other users of the plugin should be able to answer those questions more fully.
