Is it uncool to run alarm wire next to HV

For sensors, it's a low impedance circuit, and filtered. I would expect it takes massive amounts of current to be induced to trigger the alarm circuit. A few millivolts here and there won't trip it.   The keypad lines are RS485, which is differential, so any noise get induced on both wires, and...

nearly decision time: Windows 10 or Windows 7?

Windows 7 with a Haswell CPU will be supported till 2020. Newer procs (Skylake) will lose W7/W8 support next year, because Microsoft is doing whatever they can to get people into W10 for some reason.    Nothing wrong with Win 7.

No Internet - Want to Remotely Flip Switch

Just received my Particle Electron.  Has 3g data for $2.99/mo  plan on at&t or T-Mobile. Couple of months free. Might be a good fit. 1MB/mo should cover a remote command.

    DVR security hole

Gee, another security flaw in cheap Asian hardware? I try not to expose anything to the Internet that I don't trust. Getting ready to put all my internet automation devices  on a separate router, ala GRC "3 Dumb Routers" or a PFSENSE router because there are few devices I trust on the inside of...

    Wireless RS-232

Digi Xtend 900mhz, rock solid RF. Might be beyond your budget. Look at their XBEE PRO, XA-A14-CS2P. I've used their XBEE Pro modules for years,  they work well.  Low latency, configurable with many options

Using alarm sensors to create scenes and support a partitioned alarm system

No monkey business, just some ohms law. EOLR circuit on my Vista 20P is nothing more than a voltage divider circuit into a comparator. I've used this to run a single PIR into 2 partitions for years, no issues.  The circuit can't see resistance values. It sees voltage, which doesn't fluctuate...

Multi Zone Audio with Existing Wires

I have sonos Connect Amps hardwired in my closet,  running to zones in 3 rooms now, 3 more planned for this winter, as it is the best time for attic work. No wall controls needed, rip them out,  jump the wires in the wall and patch it up.

Finally have some Automation - PLUM has arrived

They have been rock solid. No reboots since installation. I find that I rarely use the app and still use the switch. I can turn on off all lights from one switch using 2 finger touch, which is nice. They are set to a schedule, works every time.

Using alarm sensors to create scenes and support a partitioned alarm system

In wiring 1 sensor to 2 zones, you will need to add a second eol resistor in parallel, or use half the resistance on a single EOL resistor.

Finally have some Automation - PLUM has arrived

My UBE Kickstarter  dimmers finally arrived after being delayed for months on end. I held off on other technologies while waiting for these to arrive, so I don't have any lighting automation. Long ago I did receive my Almond+, another Kickstarter, which is a router with home automation features...

    Home automation wiring - good?

Seems like a good plan. 100% good? You always find stuff to wire. For example, I have a TV in my kitchen. Now I want to hook up my TV to my kitchen ceiling speakers (Sonos). So I'm going to run audio from TV to closet where the Sonos Connect Amps live. That run could be Toslink or audio over...

Extending a 22/4 burglar alarm cable...

Minimize the loop area to reduce rf induction.

Extending a 22/4 burglar alarm cable...

Yes on the splice. Not sure about the rf induction claim. Typically you twist wire pairs to

Not true. Fatigue cycles cause the failure, not duration of loading.
