Thanks for all the great feedback. I have a bunch of networking and systems experience, but over the years have learned that the commercial/professional stuff just suits our family better. I think I will just suck it up and let the pros install. One question, do most of the NVR's have a video...

We are using Élan g! for HA control in our new construction. The installed is quoting $600 for each wire path exterior camera (wire path) plus Around $2k for the NVR. 1. Seems extremely expensive. Are their better solutions/value out there? 2. Does it really need to be compatible with élan...

    Home automation design review

I've been working on system design and the structured wiring plan for home automation and security in our upcoming build.  As our plan comes together, it's becoming clear that we'll be tighter on our budget than I anticipated.  I love the home automation and security stuff, so I don't mind doing...

The clean interface, video distribution and audio distribution are primary drivers for the Control4 side of things...   Man, I wish Google or Apple would get their act in gear.  I hate the relying on a dealer for all things Control4, but can't seem to find anything else suitable in the price range.

Ok, after reading the feedback realized that my PIR strategy was not good.  I've scaled back the motion detectors in favor of window sensors at any ground level window.  Also updated with some CO detectors, but after a bunch of research I'm not sure which might work with Elk.  Need to look into...

Good points on the window sensors. I've seen the Tane pills and they would hardly be noticeable. Having PIRs everywhere isn't exactly clean either. We will have painted enamel trim and window jams. Would I just have 22/2 run and what's the best way to terminate and connect the Tane sensors...

Great feedback so far, thanks. I will check on the humidity vs water sensors and update to 22/2 wire. The theory is to use Elk for security and Control4 for audio and other home automation tasks. I read some threads about whether to put the smart locks in Elk or Control4. I believe the...

    Hi!

Hello everyone... new forum user from MN.  28 years ago for a middle school science project I created a home security system from scratch with relays, sensors and all kinds of cool stuff.  I've primarily come to this forum for information and collaboration on the Elk system and look forward to...

Hey all...  I've been researching and planning HA and security for our new home build for the better part of a couple years.  As we get close to breaking ground in 2015, I've started really planning out the systems in detail.  Here is a little background on our build and my high level plans.  ...
