[Article] PCS announces new remote access hardware

/archive/j/news/2009/8/NDS-1111-PW_hires.jpg/archive/j/site/logos/upb.jpgPCS just posted a press release announcing an internet based remote access solution for UPB installers.  They will be offering an Ethernet based Serial Device Server (NDS-1111-PW), which will be installed in a remote location.  On the local side, you install the RAP (Remote Access Port) software suite, which creates a virtual COM port.  The interesting part is that they partered up with a company called Systech, which will act as an internet based proxy, providing you with access to your remote device without having to open up any firewall ports, or configure port forwarding.

While the initial focus seems to be on connecting to a remote UPB powerline interface module, to maintain remote/customer networks, you can also use this service with any serial device.  The concept is similar to the LogMeIn.com service, but with serial data instead.  Judging from the press release, there will be a subscription fee involved, but pricing data is currently not available.  The product will be shown at the upcoming CEDIA expo.  Read the press release below for more details.
