If it is pet friendly and the guy was small and slow enough, proabably not. If you don't have pets you can make them much more sensitive and not have to worry about the pet alley.

I'm wondering how well they work with large cats that are about 18lbs and like to jump on counters and climb on top of cupboards

Would the cats doing stuff like this set them off?

You should check out the Bosch DS820 TriTech PIR. It's not the best looking but it works very well.

No, sorry if it was confusing. There is a piece of 'tape' that when pulled out enables the lookdown zone and removes the pet alley. This along with proper positioning on the wall can make it more 'sensitive'. There are no sensitivity settings per se.
