Carbon monoxide

Hi everybody,

Today for the first time I looked at my ELK M1 log report. I noticed that both of my carbon monoxide are showing zone trouble every so often. I have model Macurco GD2 and they are set up as definition 17 and type 0 (EOL Supervised/RF). Should I be using NO type instead?

I did a search on the internet about my model and this is what I found "The GD-2A is a low voltage (12-24 VAC or VDC) electronic detector of combustible, heating type gases, that has been evaluated by UL for methane (natural gas) and propane (LP) gas. The GD-2A is designed for connection to UL Listed Fire Alarm/Burglary Control Panels. The GD-2A has a SPDT Alarm relay, for connection to control panels or other devices. The GD-2A does NOT detect carbon monoxide. The GD-2A does not have an internal audible sounder."

Is this part of the problem that its listed as Carbon Monoxide in the ELK? I dont think so but thought I would ask

Zone definition 20 would be more appropriate, but 17 should work as well. Type 0 is also correct. Are you sure the log is showing zone trouble? I didn't think that was possible.

I'll assume that you wired the GD-2As per the typical connection diagram in the instructions. Look at the zone voltage in the ELK RP status utility. It should be about 7 volts.

The voltage is 7.2 on one and 7.1 on the other. The connection was made using the NC connector in the device. The log does show Carbon monoxide trouble and I even noticed the message on the keypad today. It not a message that is constantly on but every so often it shows up. I have 2 Gas detectors and both have displayed the error message in the log but never at the same time. My home is supplied by gas such as, heating, hot water tank, stove, fire place but using gas appliance shouldn't trigger a trouble message. What should I do first to troubleshoot this?

Should I remove the OEL resistor or should I be adding a resistor in the device such as when smoke detectors are installed?

You need the EOL resistor. I gather that you have one GD-2A on each of two zones, so that's two EOL resistors each attached between the NO contact and one side of the trouble relay.

The connection was made using the NC connector in the device.

I don't know what this means. Nothing should be connected to NC.

Can you confirm that you wired the GD-2As per the typical connection diagram in the instructions?

Looks like it is. Also this was already hooked up by my contractor I simply upgraded to the ELK M1.

On the GD-A2: black and red are connected on power, green is in COM and yellow is in Alarm Relay NC. On the ELK yellow is zone 5 and green is negative. Could it be that by changing the definition from carbon monoxide to gas that the trouble should be corrected?

Looks like it is.

It's not! Your contractor wired it up without the trouble relay in the circuit and you didn't even mention how the EOL resistor is connected. Your CO trouble logs are either GD-2A alarms or power failures.

Rewire it per the instructions. I'm out.

Hi guys,

I don't have much knowledge with wiring but trying to understand the installation of gas detectors to the M1. Anything missing to the below connection?

On the GD-A2: black and red are connected on power, green is in COM and yellow is in Alarm Relay NC. On the ELK yellow is zone 5 and green is negative.

Gas detectors are not carbon monoxide detectors and vice versa. Without testing, I believe that ZT needs to be wired NO and not NC. It should NOT be a ZT 17, either a 13,14 or 20.
