Check/Set your M1G via mobile device?

Aside from dialing in to the M1G with a generic cell phone, using voice prompts and DTMF keys, there used to be some Java applet (I forget what it was called. Virtual monitor or something) that was a visual interface of status and you could set HA actions, disarm, etc.

I seem to recall there were some issues with it, and ELK might even go away from using Java. Can someone describe the status of that, and any upgrades in the past year or so?

Are any of you running this from a mobile phone with data service? Any problems?

How do I go about being sure a given phone supports it, before buying the phone? How much data does it consume (I will probably get a "pay per MB" data plan; Verizon's is running $2/MB + $20/mo to enable the data plan over a phone-only plan)

the big problem with this and mobile phones is that it needs to have a full browser which supports JAVA which most on phones are limited and do not. I have a windows smartphone which will not load the java app.

That looks interesting, as far as what it can do, but:

says "Connecting to ElkRM outside the local network using the non-secure port is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED, due to the obvious security issue this presents."

Has this been rectified, or maybe there is a secure work-around solution?
I'm not sure I see the value of Remote Management, if it shouldn't be used remotely, but maybe I'm missing something.

PS what's the make/model # of your smartphone? How much memory do you need to load the ElkRM software and .NET Compact Framework 2.0?

Ya, I just connect over the non-secure port. AFAIK, the secure port is not available yet for ElkRM, but there is to be a new release of ElkRM very soon that might be able to take advantage of it.

The phone I use is an AT&T 8525 with a special software called Virtual Display on it to make it emulate a 640x480 screen (it's actually 320x240). As far as memory footprint, I don't know exactly, but I never really have any problems connecting over 3G.

There are a few options...

1. Use a windows mobile phone running ElkRM - Ideally rather than enabling the un-secured port, use a home router that allows you to VPN in, as I'm doing.

2. Find a compatible phone for the web app - My Mac won't even load it - I'm not even wasting my time trying to get a phone to do it.

3. Use RDP or VNC to connect to a computer running ElkRM. I did this for a while - it worked pretty well. RDP is secure enough to open over the net - or you can set up a router to VPN into your house.

4. Elk EKeypad+ for the iPhone - I believe it supports the secure port - I only use over VPN or in the house - but it's a great app for iphone management of your house - lets you do just about anything.


There are options - I just wan't impressed with the XEP's web-interface, so I never use it - Jayson's iPhone interface is my preferred method today.
