Not sure if this has been posted here, but I just read this and thought I would share.  Here's a link to a recent WSJ article discussing hijacked cameras being used in denial-of-service attacks.

Some bits that really stood out to me:
 
"H.264 DVRs made by Dahua were especially prevalent, though security researchers said other brands were affected. In some cases the devices weren’t protected with passwords or had generic passwords"
 
"Akamai said malicious traffic on its network on Sept. 20 reached 700 gigabits a second—equivalent to 140,000 high-definition movies streaming at once, twice the size of the previous biggest deluge."
 
"Arbor Networks Inc., a security firm that defended several websites affiliated with the Rio Olympics against similar attacks this summer, found cable set-top boxes and home routers used to bombard the websites with data. Those attacks reached as much as 540 gigabits a second, Arbor said."
