Finding an Elk installer

I just went and surveyed the attic lol. What ever i do probably will be in stages. We just moved in and are expecting our 2nd child. I just wish this stuff was not so expen$ive!

Thanks,

Jason

Well, the price differential is HIGH...hardwired sensors for doors and windows are 2-5 dollars, versus 38-40 for wireless. Motions are 40ish versus 95ish. so the question is "Can you hardwire the sensor for the difference?" That difference being in a range of 35 to 60 dollars a drop.

In the end, you will have some of both whether you like it or not, if you are interested in HA/security, anyway...

So in my case, I started with a pre-hardwired setup up that covered all exterior doors, and a couple of motions...

However, I have 27 operable windows ($1200 in wireless sensors!?!?)...and I want motions covering most/all rooms/living areas, including a couple outside areas...(not even going to estimate...just drop them in as I can). Throw in door sensors for interior doors/closets...glass breaks...

Last night, I took less than 2 hours to add the elk wireless receiver to my panel...and hookup a "sample" micro wireless window sensor...the good news is that it was, again, RIDICULOUSLY easy.

Our house is just under 3,000 square feet and it appears the one receiver is going to give plenty of coverage...so I am also going to add a couple of wireless motions and a wireless door sensor (all placed at the furthest distances from the receiver) just to get a sense of performance and battery life.

Then I will go forward on a case by case basis with wired and wireless based on complexity of location. It will take a while.

Part of the DIY lore is that it isn't that expensive, compared to a PRO install (or, the "PRO" contracted security company at $30+/mo for 3-4 years). A ton of folks that have ELKs use both wired and wireless sensors. It saves time in installation, but you do have the change the batteries every now and then.

Do it in stages.

Also, note that double-hung windows require two sensors, one on the top pane, one on the bottom. Alternatively, you can use IR beams, which can protect a row of windows inexpensively.

Why does it have to be a Elk installer? Elk isn't really different in hooking them up. Heck most everyone here would walk you through anything you can't figure out.

Any alarm/security company can install sensors. The big bonus of you configuring the Elk is you know everything and have all the codes. Instead of having to call the alarm company when you want to change something.

I live in northern NJ (NYC Metro). I am building a new home and want to do mostly DIY HA but have a pro install the security system, an Elk M1. So I write the Elk folks asking for installers in my area. They promptly write back with nice list of NJ/NY installers. Problem is, none of them are. Most were defunct, the others were in businesses other than home security who wouldn't want to deal with or weren't installers at all. Of the three who were in 30 miles of me, one is a web hosting company, one changed it's name and is a PC retail store and the other is a Harlem landlord (the website given links to his online family photo album). Obviously, in the last case, the guy signed up as a "dealer" to get the wholesale price.

This is clearly not a "dealer network." Am I doing this the wrong way? Do I get a local A/V installer to do this? I am grateful for any ideas.

I believe there is a ELK Installer in Long Island in Oceanside or Long Beach. Not sure if he would go to NJ. If he is on the list you might check him out as someone told me that he is very good. I myself have never done any business with him and only heard he is good.

I am a professsional ELK installer based in Garden City, Long Island. I have 3 technicians in my group that are Home Automation specilists. PM me and I'll set up a site survey. As most of you know, my team and I are working with PowerHome for 100% support to the ELK, Stargate, and other HA systems. My products and services are listed at http://pixelriver.com

Hi Sharby,

What other brands do you install. I live on LI also and several times a year someone asks me for an alarm installer for a particular brand.

How do you like the new regulations in Nassau County?

Digger,
I install ELK, Stargate, Ademco, Napco, Russound, Niles, and some other higher ends systems. I'm already ready for these new regulations (commerical) and have been adding the features as a "value add".
