HAI Pro II - Simply Automated Switches

I installed 2 900W Simply Automated switches.
I would like to control them from my OmniPro II.

I now read on the Simply Automated Page
http://simply-automated.com/products/faqs.htm#HA4
That I would need to purchase a Serial Port Daughter Card for my OP II
and then a UMC-DB9-W from simply automated.
Which is almost $200 combined

I have v3 firmware on my OP II.

Any simpler/cheaper way to do this ?
I have the SA usb programmer (UMC-USB-W), but I know that is not
for connecting sys-sys.
Can I flash the firmware on the SA switches or anything ?

Else it's nearly cheaper to just buy 2 HAI 1000W switches.

Is your OPII the 'newer' model with the 5 on board serial ports? If so you don't need anything additional some SAI or HAI. Those instructions may have been from an older model of OPII? I'm not sure you can use other PIMs on the OPII tho, I read you can't use PCS, not 100% sure about SAI but the OPII should have come with an HAI PIM that has an RJ45 connector. All you have to do is plug in the HAI PIM and connect the cable to one of the onboard serial ports and configure it for UPB. One tip I learned the hard way... for some reason I had 2 ports configured as UPB (think I just left the default of 3 and configured 1) or something like that and I think I plugged the cable into 3 to test and nothing worked but when I plugged into 1 it did. I concluded the OPII only send signals out the first configured port, so be sure to only have one serial port configured as UPB to eliminate potential issues. FWIW I have SAI, HAI and PCS devices all working fine on the OPII with the HAI PIM.

Steve is correct.

That FAQ refers to the original Omni which did not have a built in serial port. If you have an OmniPro II, even the original model had 3 built in serial ports and the newer ones have 5...

Also the HAI PIM works fine with 3rd party UPB devices and the hookup is extremely simple. The PIM comes with all cables needed so is basically plug and play.

If you use HAI's PIM, make sure you get the HAI 36A05-2 PIM to PC cable so you can program the switches using UpStart.

And the PCS PIM will work with the Omnii just fine. If you used it to program the devices with UPStart you will factory default the PIM when you connect it.
FYI, if using the SAI switches, remember they will not be able to respond through a Split Phase Repeater (SPR) since Gen I devices only use uni-packets for responses to queries... make sure to use GEN II devices to be sure you do not have any issues... bot HAI and PCS are GEN II
