Ibutton

I have a DS1920-F5 ibutton and DS9094FS+ ibutton clip.

The ibutton fits into the clip naturally one way that has the serial number information facing down to the NEGative part of the clip. The other side of the ibutton has no information written on it, and has a wider outer edge on it. I have that side facing up to the clip on the (+) part of the clip. The ibutton doesn't fit naturally in the clip the other way.

I wired with cat5e to the clip as follows:

blue wire DATA WIRE to POSITIVE (+) on clip.
white/blue wire to NEGATIVE (-) on clip.

I believe(But, not positive) that the serial number side of the ibutton is the positive(+), so this doesn't make sense!

This diagram http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/2979 also shows the discrepency as the ibutton says NEG, and the ibutton clip (+) is touching this NEG side of the ibutton.

Can someone explain? I don't want to hook up until I am sure of correct wiring. Can't find anything on www.maxim-ic.com.

Thank you.

EXACTLY!!!

And that is the problem.

When I try to insert the iButton per that diagram I have to FORCE it in and the plastic top edges of the clip distort as it is definitely too small. It also does not fit correctly in the bottom as the outer edge of the (-) part of the iButton does not fit into the plastic base.

When I insert it the "Incorrect" way it slides in perfectly and the smaller data side fits in perfectly around the plastic base and sides and does not push the edges outward.

I can't believe that Maxim would have done it this way.

It's like having to put a slice of bread into a toaster sideways to be the correct way.

Thank you for finding that diagram.

Either the diagram that you found or the diagram that I found is incorrect on the Maxim website.

Let me clarify from my last post.

The diagram http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS9094F-DS9094FS.pdf shows how the iButton fits into the clip perfectly.

The diagram http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/ibutton/products/mounts.cfm showing the DS9094F and DS9094FS also shows how the iButton fits into the clip perfectly.

Both diagrams are "Correct" In terms of showing how the iButton is orientated within the clip.

BUT, Notice on this diagram http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/ibutton/products/mounts.cfm the iButton NEG is
touching the metal clip (+) with the correct orientation per both diagrams above.

The top of the clip is indeed POSITIVE (+) and the bottom of the clip is NEGATIVE (-) as I have one in my hand right here.

YET, as shown in this diagram
http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS9094F-DS9094FS.pdf the iButton POSITIVE (+) is facing the bottom of the clip.

I'm POSITIVE that this can't be correct. Something is mislabeled.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Maxim tech department got back to me right away after the holidays.

They have a great tech. Department. THANKS KEN!

The iButton goes into the DS9094FS+ facing downward. The terminal marked with the (+) is
the return line of the 1-Wire protocol. The terminal marked with the (-) is
the data line of the 1-Wire protocol.

On cat5e wire as follows:

blue wire to the (-) NEGATIVE data line OWIO.
white/blue wire to the (+) POSITIVE return line OWRTN.
