IP Cameras for Event Detection

Looking for camera recommendations for a 3 camera install. I'm primarily interested in event detection (pool guy shows up, UPS dropoff, unknown persons skulking around) and secondarily in recording/playback. Prior experience with cheapo Linksys cams resulted in a lot of false event alerts.

From what I've read, PIR integrated into the camera would be best followed by good granular video motion detection. We have Cat5e run to the locations. We are very unlikely to try a DIY from an external PIR to a DIO enabled camera.

Dome cameras from ACTi, Vivotek, and Mobotix have been referenced on forums (any specific model reccs?). My integrator suggested Speco.

Cameras are all over the board depending on quality needed, night viewing abilities, budget, etc.

I don't have a ton of experience with different manufacturers, but my first hand experience with ACTi leads me to never recommend them - lots of issues with them compared to more standard like even a Sony.

You don't necessarily need the camera to do the detection - this can be done by the DVR.

Interested to hear your concerns with ACTi. I have one and it has had a few issues, but I think that was operator error otherwise its been working fine for me.

The big question is IP or analog...then it's about the enviroment and ambient light.

I'd toss Mobotix, Axis and Speco in the mix. There's been some issues with Arecont, and definately NOT American Dynamics. Sony, Samsung and Panasonic are OK, but wouldn't be a first choice for me.
