M1 ToGo won't connect when away

When I connect at home over my wireless LAN, the M1 ToGo works just fine. The address I use there is the address of my M1XEP. When I'm away from home I use the address of my DSL modem and is the one that is reported when I Google " my IP address". That's the address I enter into M1 ToGo, but when I try to connect, I get a could not connect message. I'm puzzled and not very savvy in this area. I would really like to use this when away from home. Help!

I can only assume no secure connection is being setup, so did you forward the port(s) required on your router?

I'm using port 2601 and have checked the box to use a secure connection. I don't know what you mean by forward the ports. Like I said, I'm not real savvy on this kind of stuff. Can you explain what I need to do to forward them?

Check you router documentation for "port forwarding". Basically it works like this: When you make a typical connection to a device like the M1 you specify an address (like 192.168.0.123) and a port (1-65535). When you are away from home the only thing that you (usually) can connect to is your router, using the public IP address assigned by your internet provider. Port forwarding is a way of using the port number (1-65535) to tell the router "When I connect to you using port 123 connect me through to my M1". By using different port numbers you can connect to multiple devices on your LAN even though you can only connect to your home using the public IP address of your router.

You also have to deal with the fact that unless you have been assigned a "static" (never changes) IP address by your internet provided (usually an extra cost option) the IP address assigned to you may change from day to day. In this case you need to sign up with one of the "dynamic DNS" providers. These services track your current public IP address and associate it with a fixed name. You connect with the fixed name and the DNS services take care of looking up your current public IP address and using that.
