MCE Controller, by Charles Kindel, was mentioned here on Cocoontech years ago, but the post's link is now broken. The executable is now found on Sourceforge where you'll also find its source-code (hurray!) so you can extend it.
So what can it do for you? It permits your Home Automation software to control the operation of a networked PC using simple text-based commands. Put the PC into Standby mode, start an application, send keystrokes, you get the idea. It's command set was originally designed to control MCE (pause, play, channel up, etc). However, its command language is defined in a text file so you can easily add new commands. Neat.
It talks via port 5150 but you can easily set it to whatever you need. There's no authentication mechanism so you wouldn't want to expose it to the Internet. A very handy app for your HA toolkit.
