Sorry to hear that, I had a similar situation with UPB when my neighbors house was hit by lightening. Fortunately I only had about 8 devices installed at the time, so it was not TOO bad ...

I recommend the 51120-1 Leviton Split phase TVSS to anyone doing an automated lighting setup.

If it makes you feel any better, I spent Christmas with pneumonia ...

I have air-gapped and reset everything at least twice. I spoke to the folks at you know where and they agreed to replace only the switches that were under warranty. That was 8 out of 26. The WAF is in the negative numbers. It's time to rip it all out and stop playing with toys. A shame, because toys are so much fun. But we all know who runs the roost.

My GUESS is that because they do not have line to ground and neutral to ground MOV's (they only have across the line) that they are vulnerable. They really should consider improving the transient protection in the devices. It would not cost that much more especially when you consider the savings for the warranty replacements.

Hmm...hadn't thought about whole house surge protection. I'd imagine it shouldn't take much for an electrician to install that thing, right? It just goes between the meter and the breaker box? I should have planned for that ahead of time, but maybe they won't punish me too bad if I bought that thing and installed it....

I'm going to be going with OnQ lighting, btw.

And Wooper, I'll resist using the phrase that was so common when someone would leave the online computer games I played ("Can I have all yur stuff??" ). I'd say that if life became unbearable without your HA, then that just means you were using it a lot!..but unfortunately lighting is a different beast. One of the reasons I chose OnQ was that the switches would work like normal switches in the absense of any kind of external control...but I don't know how they'd hold up under a surge either. But I also went with them because they so easily retrofit existing electrical setup, so should I find it a deficient setup for some reason, I can always put the old toggles back in.

I hope you can salvage some WAF and she doesn't punish you too bad.

I'm not on the couch or anything, but she has been somewhat distant. She was tolerant of HA as long as it served her, but once it failed, and this was a MISERABLE failure, she turned on it quickly.

I think once she has to live without some of the fun stuff, like lights going on and off automatically at sunset and sunrise, she may see the need for at least a few toys. For now, I'll just lay low and let the drywall dust settle where it may.

Here's hoping for a happy and safe new year for all Cocooners.

If it helps...... I was in your shoes with the paddle failures for the Switchlincs and SH not replacing them. It took months to get them to admit to and correct the problem.

I have been slowly adding Insteon back. I did get SH to compromise and replace 7 out of 24 or so devices. It was basically take this and get lost or just get lost attitude. Now I cant say that they never replaced anything.

Funny how I just bought some new SH products and the warranty that came with them no longer says "seller" but says SH will warranty them. Maybe their distributors finally forced them to own up to the problems. I know HD refuses to deal with the SH warranty issues as well as a misc distributor here and there.

And just to top off the year, someone (could it be the disgruntled wife) sat on my pronto remote. Seems the touch screen is no longer working. Looks like the glass is broken. What next???

I guess I'm destined to a non-automated life.
