Alright, I was headed towards Insteon and ran across the Zigbee stuff in the classifieds - is there a Premise driver that supports Zigbee or anyone interested in collaborating to write one? I saw an older thread that asked about it, but it seemed to fall flat.

Oh mystic voice of Premise (that's you Damon), you have anything up your sleeve you could share (or another Chi-town guy could bribe out of you with beer :D Chuck? 123 - feeling gutsy? Upshot is that I'm trying to virtualize this Premise build, so I can share notes re that once it's up and running.

Thanks,
Adam

... 123 - feeling gutsy?
I'm currently busy with an HAI Omnistat2 driver followed by one for the Midon Design TEMP08. I don't have any Zigbee-based hardware, nor do I have plans to acquire any, so I'm not well-positioned to perform Zigbee software development

Good luck with your project.

Adam,

While I can't speak to Zigbee, I have had some success running Premise in a virtualized environment. The upshot is that it works fine. I use a virtualized instance for my test environment running under Hyper-V. Where you will run into trouble is getting direct access to hardware on the physical host (COM ports, USB, etc.). The virtualization software you use will drive what kind of access you get to those devices. In my case (using Hyper-V), I had none. However, my setup mostly utilizes network-based peripherals (GC-100's, Barix Exstreamers, UPnP AV media renderers, etc.) so the limitation on physical server device access wasn't an issue for me.

Good Luck,

-John

I would recommend zwave via 123's vizia driver for lighting. The RZC0P (Leviton Vizia RF RS232 controller) when used with a Vizia RF and RF+ dimmers and switches offers two way feedback in addition to regular polling support... 123 also added support for a zwave thermostat to his vizia driver which I also use with a cheap $65 zwave thermostat. Not having to run cables for the thermostat was great. Mostly all the leviton vizia modules (and even the Wayne Dalton Thermostat) require a common wire to be present, so make sure you have one before buying. EDIT: In addition to the required common wire, several of the Vizia RF+ dimmers also require an earth ground, giving a total of 4 wires to hook up.
