Oops.. bought the wrong contacts

BTW - I'm saying bottom of the window because I'd like to place 2 magnets on each window... one at the closed position, the other a few inches open as a vent.

Well, your windows are too thin for the micra series as you've noticed but you don't have wires to support thinner contacts... so most people would probably default to normal surface-mount wireless transmitters and be done with it.

BUT - if you're one of those people who's not satisfied with settling and doesn't mind a little extra work to get the result you really want - I know of one other option... Check out the 5816/5817 series wireless transmitters - they can be used with normal wired contacts to make them wireless. The concept is you use a normal 3/8" or so recessed contact in the frame but you route the wires up to a 5816 wireless transmitter making it now a wireless contact. The 5817 will handle 3 NC contacts, so if you have 2-3 windows/doors close together that you can wire between (but it's too much to wire all the way back to a panel), then this could work.

You also *might* be able to get a 5818 to work - it will require drilling through all layers of the window frame - which you'd have to do for wired anyway - so check dimensions to see if that'd work.

I'm definitely not the type that will just settle. Happy to bust out of my comfort zone to make it happen. Not sure I totally understood the connection to a wireless.... If I can get the wire in, I can get a full run back to the box. I'm just not entirely sure how to retrofit an existing window with a wired contact w/o opening up the wall.

You're not going to get a recessed RF contact in the bottom track of the window.

Now that you're mentioning "venting" the windows, honestly, you're better off installing a small surface contact. If done correctly, the unit won't stand out worse than the aluminum extrusion that's already there. It'll also make it easier to line up the magnets for the "open" and "vented" positions compared to a line on the sash or similar.

If you don't want to see a contact inside your house on the sill, etc. then you're looking at doing security screens.

I can't see the entire view, but you should be able to normally conceal a transmitter at the top of the window behind a curtain, shade or blind...that's usually how I'd look at the window.

You could also look at a 5811 contact, but once you move into the coin cells, plan on changing batteries more often than those with CR123's.

There's plenty of ways to run wiring to a transmitter without opening a wall. Even if you're not that skilled, you could pull a piece of trim, either top or bottom and use that for working room.
