A couple practical options for me are:

- Gun. Not ready for this, but is a strong possibility down the road. Since I live in an apartment, I worry about accidentally harming someone else.

- Pepper Spray. I think this is the best option for the time being. I got a 1lb Fox sprayer and want to use in an emergency at the home. It seems to be the best bang for the buck and non lethal.

- Taser. Quite expensive for a laser sight air taser, but may be a decent option.

Here is where it gets interesting...

- Tear gas grenade + gas mask. I do not know anything about this, but was just brainstorming. Is it practical or just dumb?

- Smoke grenade (or something that cannot be seen through) + nightscope. Thermal imagers can be very small (size of a flashlight) and are used by fire depts to see through smoke. They are quite pricey. Probably impractical, but something to think about.

I like the nonlethal options (not that I am worried about inflicting harm on an intruder), but because of the possible negative effects. Accidently harming myself or someone else, having a gun turned on me, not having quick access possibly, possible hesitation.

Anyway, I would like to hear some thoughts about GOOD ideas and let me know just how bad my wild ideas are.

Not interested in a dog, but the shot gun is certainly an option...and yes for the phone.

But as of now, I am not ready for a gun (see above reasons).

In general, what are the thoughts on a 1lb pepper spray (heavy duty) and taser instead of a gun?

I wouldn't go taser.

You can get paintballs with nasty stuff inside, as if getting shot by one unprotected wasn't bad enough.

With a 12 gauge you can pick your load from #7 (bird shot) which will basically skin someone and not pentrate an interior wall very well to 2oz sluggers that will through and through the whole damn building. In addition to less then lethal bean bags and MACE/pepper spray. Heck they even have 12 gauge TASER rounds or will shortly. Thats added info for you as I understand (and further think you are wise!) in your hesitation to have a gun around. It's not a choice to be taken wisely, at my last house I had to put mine away as the floorplan of the house was not really safe for firearm defence. My current home however is an invader's nightmare, steep narrow staircase is the only access to bedroom floor.

Also a pump action shotgun has the international sound of "run like hell" integrated.

Whatever you do you need to plan/train and be ready to carry out whatever you come up with.

There is a reason why law enforcement and military alike like the plain old 12 gauge it is very versitile. Also works as a club if no ammo!
