Security system buying advice

I have a friend who just bought a newly built house and wants to install a security system instead of going with the ADT types. He has no interest in a home automation system but does want the ability to access it from the internet (him and his wife have iphones). I priced out a Elk EZ 8 system and for what he will need to have what he wants (wireless, motions, doors, glassbreaks) would run minimum $1200 (EZ 8, ethernet and wirelss adapter bulk of cost). He is looking into Nextalarm as his service.

Anyone know of systems that a just security systems that are accessible via the net?

Thanks

Ademco Vista Security, Caddx , DSC, ELK, HAI/OnQ Panel, Napco Gemini all have PC interfaces. But you will still need some type of software to interface to these systems.

1. People change their mind once exposed to what the systems can do. If they already have iPhones and want to access to arm/disarm, etc remotely, it is not a stretch to say they may want to incorporate basic automation like lighting and thermostat control. So just a few hundred more you are better off with something like the EZ8 than can grow if they change their mind.

2. Who is installing it - you-them? It is so much easier to program and maintain the Elk/HAI panels with software rather than doing cryptic configuration on keypads.

3. Call places like Automated Outlet and tell them what you are looking for. When buying multiple items you will often be able to get a better price than what is shown online due to manufacturer pricing regulations.

In the long run I don't think you will save much over a typical/basic system. Look at the payback including monitoring savings - a few hundred a year.

A little cheaper on the upfront cost would be a GE Concord 4. you can get that system with 1 keypad for $175. the includes the wireless sensor module.

They parter with alarm.com which is one of the best if not the best online monitoring. They have iphone app, mobile browser access and android app on the way. Back when I signed up with them they sold direct to customer now they sell via dealers. but if you google alarm.com you will find a few places selling the GSM module you need for under $200..

with that i am sure you can hook up with them...
