The format wars are over

The War is Over.

Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.

So it's not official yet but it sounded highly likely that this is going to be a done deal. Thanks for posting. I hope this means that more DVDs will come out in Blu-Ray format and make it worth me buying a new DVD player. I've held off for now simply because I did not know who to go with.

Just remember, Sony = rootkit = evil

Thomas Hesse, Sony BMG's Global Digital Business President, told reporter Neda Ulaby, "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?"

I completely agree with you here. I will not buy a Sony product after this incident. It is not so much their putting it in initially, which they may or may not have known they were doing (or their 3rd party security vendor knew it), but it was their response afterward when it came to light.

I remember folks swearing they would never again buy Toshiba products after they sold secret US submarine propeller technology... yet they seem to be doing OK in spite of the scandal.

How much business is Sony actually losing over the rootkit scandal?

My guess is very little.

If people "don't know what a rootkit is", then there also very few that heard of the issue (or care). Forums like this that discuss these things are teenie tiny compared to the market that Sony is in.

I don't think my mom has any idea on what Sony did, but she does buy CDs.

I imagine I will have a harder time selling the brand new in box Toshiba hd-a2cf now. I bought an extra one when they were on sale at walmart for 98 bucks knowing a fellow cocooner would want it.

Could fight with walmart to take it back. Its not opened and i have the receipt.

According to my wife, it's not much of a fight...they'll take back half-eaten bananas, even without a receipt. They should easily take your toy back. But for only $98, it might be worth more in 20 years as a collectors piece. :o

If it does a good job of upconverting regular DVDs to HD resolutions then it might be worth the $98 to keep it and use it just for that.
