Thermostat C-wire substitute?

Hey guys, I have a thermostat that is in the downstairs area of my house that does not have a C-wire and I would really rather not run my thermostats on batteries. I found a couple of videos on the Internet (And if its on the internet then its true right?) that discuss using a 24V 300Ma external transformer as a substitute for the C-wire.

Has anyone done this or looked at it? Just curious.

Here is an example of what I am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgDseEF-4OY&feature=related

I know several users on the HomeSeer message board do this with out an issue and for many it's a shorter route rather than going back to the furnace.

Thanks Rupp! I posted over there too. I was mainly just looking for some user experiences to make sure this was not some half baked hack that was going to cause me grief down the road. Home Automation costs way too much money to do things half assed if you know what I mean! :-)

I know exactly what you mean and by all means do it right the first time and you will not have to do it again.
