VIOP providers?

Incidentally, I've had three instances lately of people, two of which I had explicitly told ahead of time, texting me info at my home (Ooma) number, then getting upset when I did not answer.
 
It has really passed the point where a phone number has to get text or you have these things happen.
 
When I get some time I have to get rid of ooma for that reason.  In one case I missed setting up a doctor's appointment who has months' long waiting lists.  Their fault, but they do not care.
 
You can also get a Google Voice number which accepts texts and will ring any of your phones.  I forward my GV number to my Ooma line.

Yeah, I have one I use for things like business registrations (i.e. that I have to make public but want to never answer). 
 
The problem I have with GV numbers is that you can't control the caller ID, so if you ever want to call from that number, people see ome random name (well, not random, as it stays the same, but random as in it may not be yours, it could be "JOES GARBAGE" or "PORN CENTRAL" appearing on people's phones and you cannot fix it). 
 
Yeah here only mostly use GV for incoming phone calls. 

Personally never give my cell phone out for any contact info.  Give main home phone and GV number. 

On the Ooma line disabled messages where as Panasonic answering machine still enabled.
 
Well now too have disabled message answering on cell phones when they are off. 

IE: when someone calls a cell phone number here and phone is off they get a disconnect or fast busy signal.
 
I stopped tethering to my cell phone many years ago while concurrently working on a global enterprise tethering project for the boss.
 
I have noticed a couple of doctors offices have CID shut off (privacy) when dialing out. 
 
Consumers Report mentions that the highest rate of identity theft comes from hospitals, clinics and doctors offices.
 
They also mention only providing your medical insurance card to the office or hospital and never provide your social security number.

All non CID calls (private) get dropped. I tell office to use email to get hold of me.
