Just when you think ZigBee can't get more confusing., The ZigBee Alliance announces their intentions of developing a new open standard for LED lighting control, called ZigBee Light Link. From the press release:

The Alliance is creating a standard that will be as easy to use as a common dimmer switch. Light bulbs, LED fixtures, sensors, timers, remotes and switches built using ZigBee Light Link will not require special devices to coordinate in a home's network. Consumers will be able to easily install and add extra devices to their home lighting network. Like all devices in the ZigBee portfolio, ZigBee Light Link devices can be controlled over the Internet through connected computers, tablets and smart phones. Development of this standard is being steered by industry-leading lighting experts such as GE, Greenwave Reality, OSRAM Sylvania and Philips.

You can find more info about this platform on their site.

What do you know, a new standard (or variation on the current standard) just as I'm planning for lighting automation in my first HA project ... yippee. I wonder how long before these devices hit the streets and whether I should postpone the lighting portion of the project. Cheaper and easier are always very enticing ... ;)

I am actually a little confused by this myself. Something like this should fall under the 'Home Automation' profile, and most controllers only support 1 profile (or at least they did when they first launched ZigBee support). I invited the ZigBee folks to participate in this thread, hopefully they will have the time. I'll update this thread if I have more info.
