getting started (finally)!

I was here awhile ago and got help on pre-wiring my house and lost my account(ID) so had to sign up a new one.  Now I'm finally ready to get started and wanted to know a few things.  I would like to automate my lighting, alarm system, hvac, outdoor lighting and sprinkler system.

1. for lighting is simply aumotated and upb still recommended and is the the starter kits I see a good starting point?  I don't want to buying anything twice or parts not necessary.

2. is ELK still a good system to use for the diyers?

The reason I ask is its been almost two years since I ran all of the pre-wire and now I'm ready to get started wanted to know if much has changed or are there better things out now.

Thanks!

I use the UDI ISY994i system. It has built in support for the ELK security systems although I don't use it. The ISY is well supported by manufacturer and users, and talks to Insteon, X10, Zwave and zigbee devices. The Insteon communication has better reach than most wireless only systems being that communicates with simultaneous RF and powerline signals using mess network technology. Almost every device is a system repeater, so that no specialised repeaters or signal extenders are required, and signals are verified by check-back ACK signals.

The ISY can control other network devices and can be monitored and controlled from several program apps from various sources. It only draws less than a watt or two, has proven to be very reliable over the years of operation, and my ISY sits on top of a duplex receptacle box, only slightly wider.

Compare the remote module pricing to other systems.
