Haiku Haiku Helper setup question

This is a dumb question, but I can't find the answer - Does my macbook pro have to be on (running) for haiku helper to work and send notifications?  Or can I close it (sleep mode) and will it still work?

It does have to be awake, because it needs to remain connected to the controller. The screen can sleep though.
