    Smartbulb phenomenon

I think the biggest problem is how the lighting is setup.  So if you have the LED dimming at the bulb hooked up to a lamp.  It means you can only control the lamp via app or the lamp directly but it won't operate under both.  So if you switched the lamp off, you can't turn it on via app, and...

    Would self monitoring work?

From what I've read though, pretty much majority of the victims to theft and burglary are simply the result of people leaving their cars or homes unlocked and/or with keys readily accessible.  So simply locking the doors would prevent majority of home owner's problems.  Add that to a dog...

Another android touchscreen for your switchbox (kickstarter)

So far, i'm 1 for 2 in my crowd source projects.  I funded the Piper and that one delivered and is now purchased by iControl so i'm assuming they'll have continued development.  Product is as advertised so not too bad for my first try   And then another one is said to have delivery date of...

    Would self monitoring work?

Well, theoretically, according to law enforcement, dogs, security, light motion detectors, cameras, would deter 99% of all would be burglars because they would choose the path of least resistance.  They would typically choose a residence with nobody at home as well, so if someone responded...

    Presence or Occupancy Detection

RFID tags in all your wife's clothing so it doesn't activate the lights but activates it for everyone else?  Unless she starts walking around naked of course, then it could be a problem.. or do it with the kids since there's probably less clothes that needs to be tagged.

Can't say I'm surprised about the Nest detectors

So they can make the Nest look flat and pastel and provide abilities that it's competitors did 2 years ago and call it by a different name and claim it's their innovation?

Can't say I'm surprised about the Nest detectors

The most recent consumer reports has a small blurb on the Nest smoke detector and pretty much, the Nest detector doesn't really do it's primary job really well, detecting smoke..  so i'm wondering what the point of spending 5x the money for something that can't do it's primary function well?    ...

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Ok, now here's the question, how to I tell which wire is hot from the panel and which one's the load with a multimeter.  Sorry for the newbie questions but never learned this when I was a kid :(

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Yeah, the neutrals are tied together.   This was the first dimmer I worked on which is in the dining room and it didn't work, I thought it was a bad switch as well, so I tried switching out another dimmer in the family room in the same way, and I was able to get the family room dimmer switch...

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Not sure if you can see much but this is the original dimmer.  The neutral is in the back with the red wire nut.  I guess the worse case scenario, I can simply have the builder come fix this since it's a new construction.. PITA though..

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Yeah, right now since the original dimmer didn't require a neutral, it's not connecting to anything else but in a wire nut by itself. And since the Leviton dimmers are powered by the neutral, it doesn't power up but the original dimmer is working properly which is why I suspect the dimmer.    ...

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Another question regarding wiring, I have a single gang box that doesn't seem to work with my leviton dimmer.  The dimmers works everywhere else in the house except for this one.  The original dimmer doesn't have a neutral connected and i'm replacing it with a zwave dimmer with a neutral.  All...

Anything besides a neutral wire needed for "smart" light switches?

Hi Guys,   Newbie question about neutrals.  So after pulling out my original dimmer switch to add a zwave dimmer, I found 2 white wires tied together and capped off in the back of the box all alone in the back.  Since the original dimmer didn't have a neutral, there's no wires coming out of it...

Most cost efficient way to upgrade to zwave light switches

Thanks for the information.  I'll have to start pulling out the switches to see what they're like behind the walls.     Right now, I got a Piper thingy and it allows Z-Wave control which is why i'm looking at Z-Wave.  So far only playing with the door sensor and a wall plug control, it works...

Most cost efficient way to upgrade to zwave light switches

I'm looking to upgrade my home with some automation and have decided to go with zwave.  Most of my lights are recessed lighting so the best way would probably to replace the switches.  I'm trying to figure out the most cost efficient ways to do this though.     The biggest problem I'm trying to...
