Remote controlling an iPad in the wall?

I have an older iTouch mounted in an iPort wall mount in my bedroom.  I run Cinemar MainLobby on it to perform basic functions.  I am planning to replace this iTouch with first generation iPad mini.  The iTouch is jail broken, and I am able to send commands to it to dim the screen, reboot, etc.  I wondered if anyone here has been able to do something similar without jail breaking the device?  As it is in the bedroom I want to shut the backlight off when the house goes to sleep, etc.

Are you running an app that accepts those commands?  Curious what you use.

While you cannot jailbreak the latest iOS, you can install apps of your own on it now (Apple allows non-developers to install apps for personal use).  So any app that accepted commands could in theory be replicated on todays' devices.  If it's not your own app, you would need the developer to provide you source, as there is no (non-Apple) app store for non-jailbroken devices.
