What are the standard practices for outdoor sirens?

I'm thinking that I read somewhere about my community's local requirement that outdoor sirens silence themselves after 5 minutes, regardless of the cause, whether an emergency or a nuisance alarm.

    Solar Power Design Suggestions

This battery caught my eye the other day. The guys that built the Killacycle drag racing bike have designed a jig for welding together multiple A123 nanophosphate Li Ion cells in series/parallel.

    Vizia RF + giveaway

Will this board's automatic contest entry feature work if I click the "reply" button on any post in this thread, or just the reply button on first post? ;)

    Incandescent phase out? What next?

The Yodobashi Camera store in Osaka has an excellent display of various lighting sources for side-by-side comparison. The clustered LED bulb replacements were wimpy. All were cool blue/white, and some were only half-wave rectified and had a nasty flicker. No OLED lighting panels yet. The...

    EHX News?

Did HAI show their Omnistat II? If so, did it have electronics inside, or was it the mockup they showed at C.E.S? I would like to see the spectrum of user-selectable backlight colors that it's supposed to have.

Want low-power, fanless, computer to drive automation software and touchscreens

I'm using the eBox 4850 with 4GB IDE flash. Works great running FreeBSD.

    Z-Wave Library BETA now available.

I hope to try it, but right now I'm sidetracked tinkering with HomeDaemon. I've been typing all my RZC0P commands by hand with TeraTerm, and it's getting old. Lately I've been psychoanalyzing the new Hawking Tech door/window sensor to discover what settings it supports. I'd like to see the...

    Shopping for Another UPS

Suppose I have an HP TouchSmart IQ775 on my kitchen counter, how would I go about hiding the UPS? If I hide the UPS inside a kitchen cabinet, what is the cleanest, safest way to route the power from an AC outlet to the UPS and from the UPS to the counter top? PS: How about Liebert?

    Questions to sell automation

I think your Average Joe would be interested in knowing that he can dim the lights in his TV room or bedroom without getting out of his chair or out of bed. Show him how that can be done for less than a hundred bucks and without tearing up the house. Once he's hooked on that idea you can show...

    Documenting Your System

That sounds cool. I might like to see an example. Did you do it in Excel? Did they even have Excel 20 years ago? - Regarding the Spanish speakers, in my area it is the Spanish speakers who have created home-buying pressure from the bottom up. They've boosted the values of starter homes...

    Documenting Your System

Surely this topic has come up before, but a casual search didn't turn up anything, so I'll show my noob-ness and start a new one... The home automation paperwork was starting to pile up, and I thought that I'd get organized and put it all in a three-ring binder like I did back in my wastewater...

Why you DO NOT want IR on the camera.

If the only light source in that clip had been on the camera, then wouldn't Mr. Short's shadow have pointed directly away from the camera?

LED lighting ..future or not ? tests + pics ..then dimming control questions!!

Isn't there a resistor in series with our LED?

LED lighting ..future or not ? tests + pics ..then dimming control questions!!

I'm using the LED ropes for indirect cove lighting. The color isn't very appealing, but it works great coupled with a PIR to light your way through a dark house. (I think it's silly to control fluorescents with a PIR - all that cycling on and off doesn't save you much energy, but LEDs don't...

    Serial over Cat 5

How about using a terminal server wherever you need a serial connection in your network? Of course, your software will need to be able to connect to a socket instead of a com port.
