Large external storage array? How to build?

Perhaps consider an Unraid system. If you'll go to a 9-bay tower or rack mount enclosure with 5x3 bays, you're good to go with 15 drives pretty affordably. Great performance, reliable, super-flexible.

Interesting PC clone of the new iMac

Having run a few low-powered systems in my touchscreen controller adventures (I've been through a couple dozen touchscreen tablets so far and have eight in use at the house now), I have learned to be very leery of some of these processors - especially if the application in use involves graphics...

Interesting PC clone of the new iMac

Alternative to Mac Mini: http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm Been using it for a while now. Very quiet. Supports dual monitors - which the Mac Mini does not.

    water shut off valve

Sprinkler valves can be all brass. Just as an example: http://www.rainbird.com/diy/products/valves/ea75asvul.htm Most manufacturers make them. They're not as inexpensive as a junk-yard washing machine valve... but they're not a junk-yard washing machine valve, either. ;) BTW: these are the...

Help me pick a cheap surveillance system

I use the Axis camera servers. Either their cam server or their camera/server units will directly email pictures based on motion without any external trigger (like a doorbell). I tested a D-Link camera a couple of years ago. I think it did that too. Just a thought.

    Mute music when phone rings

Sorry, I've been off HomeSeer for a while, but I had a CallerID config in HS that ran from a modem. I hope that sends you on the right track.

Mostly accurate, actually. It goes back a ways; but that's really the essence of it. Note that proxy ARP is different than a Proxy Server (as you'll note mentioned in your Windows "Internet Config" stuff). The purpose of Proxy ARP is simple: make a machine pretend to be something it's not. It...

More rooms than zones for Russound audio?

prolly obvious, but note that two 4Ohm speakers in series or two 16Ohm in parallel will both get that 8Ohm load. Perhaps also worth considering that a CAV RCA output can be used to an external amp or group of external amps for a single zone. Low-cost T-amps might be a way to go.

    My Weekend Project

I see rock-climbing on the list. Let me know when you're in California. We can climb with and without rope one day (multi-pitch trad, sport, and bouldering are all different games) then surf the next. Big waves are helluva rush. Of course, "big waves" for me stop at 12-15 foot. I can...

    Powder Room Automation

I did this sort of thing with X10 stuff at one point - I still have the W800RF, but now it's connected to the Elk - but I use hard-wired and/or wireless sensors with the Elk and Elk/Insteon for the lights. Clearly, the lighting protocol is irrelevant. I don't have the loo done (though the kids...

    Mute music when phone rings

I doubt it's what you're asking, but I've done that with the full home-audio/video environment for years now - with HomeSeer originally and now with MainLobby Server. Haven't looked into doing it with any other local approach, though.

Thanks for letting me "play" on this one! The "it works so let's not fix it" approach is not an all bad one; can't fault the network administrator for that! :) Cheers!

I realize it's all working; I think it's cool that you're investigating. :) I don't want to diss the network administrator (which usually means I'm about to), but their job rarely involves - or requires, as is evident here - actually understanding how networking works. They're usually actually...

SmartLabs INSTEON-Compatible RemoteLinc Wireless Remote Control Wins Electronic House Product of the

NO KIDDING! That thing is the worst physical layout in it's and any nearly similar product space. I'm glad it works functionally, but I can't comprehend how that physical design made it to market without someone drowning that runt. :) What I find most ridiculous about it is how many usable...
