Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

I haven't had time to do the actually keypad install so I was able to try a few test scenarios out of curiosity. What I'm seeing this morning is that the problem seems more relevant to using wires on the same twisted pair. All along, I had been using green/white and white/green which was what...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

Should I have been using shielded cable? I am using plain ol' cat5e. I admit I'm a bit clueless on how sensitive the wiegand signals are. I had seen warnings to keep it under 10' but I also searched cocoontech and saw that others have had success going much farther as long as the power...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

The wiegand-usb dongle arrived and I hooked the data leads up at the location of the Elk keypad and it read correctly and consistently what was being entered on the essex keypad. So I thought about wiping the M1 clean just in case there were any ghost settings messing me up. But then I thought...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

My M1G has firmware 5.2.4, the keypads are all 2.1.48, and RP is at 2.0.14. While there are newer M1G firmwares, the release notes don't address anything like what I'm dealing with. It even notes that new units are still shipped with 5.2.4. There are newer XSP and XEP firmwares but nothing...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

This actually openend up an area of testing I had not thought of. Since this is my first external device and is not a swipe, I have never used user enrolling via the keypad - Ive only used RP. By enrolling the essex users via the Elk keypad as I've done this afternoon, I'm seeing the Elk...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

Per the documentation for the essex, it is only designed to output 26-bit Wiegand. The only changeable aspects are the site code and the input voltage (12v or 5v... yes I have the jumper set to 12v). A link to the documentation is in one of the posts higher up. I'm anxiously awaiting the...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

I did the second of my illogical tests (hey, it makes me feel better to rule out stuff) by adding a new keypad elsewhere on the bus and then attaching the Essex keypad to it. The results were the same. So with obvious hardware and config issues mostly ruled out, I am very curious to see what...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

The KP does beep each time the # key on the Essex keypad is pressed regardless of whether a valid code was entered. Thank you for confirming what your settings are that work -- this helps begin to rule out the basic settings issues. With that said, I do need to completely rule out the Essex...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

I could remove the arm/disarm settings and simply select access for the keypad user codes. Then use rules to arm/disarm based on access to that keypad. I will test this setup tomorrow as a fall back option. However, I'm not 100% ready to give up on the idea that if the user is setup for...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I set the area to "double keypress" but unfortunately the results were unchanged. I then tried checking "access" for the test account -- it had the effect of no longer arming the system when the user code was entered on the Essex keypad. I thought that...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

I swapped out the keypad but it made no difference. I deleted all test user accounts and started with a fresh new one with the same settings as accounts that currently work when used directly on the keypad. Same result. I attached a screenshot of the user screen as a reference.

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

As far as it being a configuration issue, I hope you are right. It would make the most logical sense since it is partially functional as far as its ability to arm the system. My keypad swapping test is not logical per se, it would just be me trying to rule out any improbables. I will post a...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

Before I left for work, I tried creating a new user with the default settings. It was able to arm but again not able to disarm. A disappointing test but good to know that, from your experience, those setting should work with an external wiegand keypad. From here, I'm thinking I'll have to...

Trouble with Essex Keypad and Elk M1

Thanks for such a fast response. The keypad is an Essex KTP-103-SN. The keypad it is wired to is an Elk M1KP via a W035A harness. My assumption is that the calculator did determine the correct code since it recognizes it to arm the system. Yes, I wait for the exit delay to expire to try...
