Help please: replacing 3-way switches with z-wave

I've got it all closed up now, but I think it's just shy of 1.75" deep. I use all Linear z-wave switches, because their dimmers by far work the best with LED loads and as a bonus they're cheaper than most other switches (about $40 per). It fits in that box, but barely, and only because the...

Help please: replacing 3-way switches with z-wave

Ah, good thinking! Yes, that probably would have worked for pretty much any other instance, although in this particular case my secondary box is a shallow box (in a furred basement wall) and the accessory switch barely fits. The dimmer switch probably wouldn't have fit, so my only choice was...

Help please: replacing 3-way switches with z-wave

And that's what I wound up doing. I got the dimmer working by itself in box 1 by tying together red and black in box 2. Then I used the hot and neutral from the other switch in box 2 (on a different circuit) to power the aux switch.   If I wouldn't have had that other line/neutral feed in box...

Help please: replacing 3-way switches with z-wave

Thanks guys. Yes I agree it's weird, but somehow it works normally with standard 3 way switches.   I don't have the option of disconnecting/rewiring the lights; they're recessed pre-construction (not reno) lights, the wiring is not accessible.   My aim is to do virtual 3-way, so I just need to...

Help please: replacing 3-way switches with z-wave

I've got a 3-way circuit wired like the below (I know this for sure):   https://www.evernote.com/shard/s2/sh/d124bd93-7cdb-414c-87e4-caaad63f70a3/ccfa3e3f2b0dd6118b4fbaa510aa3751   I have a Linear Z-wave dimmer (line, load, neutral, ground) and a Linear z-wave accessory switch (line, neutral...

Odd behavior with UPB switch in *one* spot

Thanks for all the input. Unfortunately, I'm no closer to a solution.   1. There are no low-voltage lights on this circuit. Everything is line voltage. 2. There is nothing else on this circuit -- no plugs, nothing. Only line-level light fixtures for the family room and dining room. I have...

Odd behavior with UPB switch in *one* spot

It's located in the family room. From what I can tell, it's on a circuit that has ONLY lights -- no appliances, no home theater equipment, no plugs. When I flip that breaker off, the stuff I have plugged in (TV, receiver, etc) in the room stays on. The other UPB switches on the same circuit work...

Odd behavior with UPB switch in *one* spot

I had another thread about this, but it was deleted with no explanation, so here goes again.   I've been installing Simply Automated US2-40 switches throughout my first floor as the beginnings of a home automation system. I have a UPB power line interface that I use to program the switches via...

Wiring help -- "reversing" a 3-way switch setup

I think, because of the way these boxes are wired in my house, I need to purchase another full load switch rather than a remote switch. I did get it to work the way I wanted with two load switches, and the secondary one (in the "first" switch box) was able to be programmed the way I expect.   I...

Wiring help -- "reversing" a 3-way switch setup

I have a three-way switched light in my entry way that I'm trying to include in my UPB home automation setup. I want to have a Simply Automated switch (US2-40) by the door, which will enable it to use a faceplate that has a rocker switch and four buttons for triggering scenes. The other switch...

New to HA, ordered a Raspberry Pi and need to pick lighting control protocol

Got it working by fiddling with some of the settings in the Windows VSP software -- emulating strict baud rate I think is the one that did it. This is cool -- now I can program the network via UpStart while leaving the UPB PIM connected to the RPi.

New to HA, ordered a Raspberry Pi and need to pick lighting control protocol

That looks great, I'm definitely going to check it out. Love the solid documentation and REST API. Somehow, in all the time I've been searching the web for home interface software, I never came across this. Which I think illustrates the biggest problem for someone just trying to get started...

New to HA, ordered a Raspberry Pi and need to pick lighting control protocol

OK thanks, that helps. I assume, then, that MisterHouse is able to "watch" for scene commands being sent across the UPB network, and perform additional actions? For example, I intend to get some kind of sensors for the garage doors. When I set my "nighttime" scene using a UPB scene switch on the...

New to HA, ordered a Raspberry Pi and need to pick lighting control protocol

^ picta, you should have ordered it from Amazon. I got mine within a few days.   Thank you all again for your help. I have received my first HAI dimmer switch and the USB-to-serial cable, and am now just waiting on my UPB PIM so I can get started.   I have a fundamental question that I'm...

New to HA, ordered a Raspberry Pi and need to pick lighting control protocol

Great, thanks...I'm going to order a couple HAI switches to get started.   I got my Raspberry Pi setup and Misterhouse installed. I can't really do anything until I have a controller, though. HAI's PIM looks to be serial only. My initial reaction was...seriously? Who still has a computer with a...
