115v to 12v Relay In A Box?

The thing to check is if your existing solar charger has over voltage protection on outputs.  Most good quality charge controllers now do this, so running them in parallel will (should) just make them shutdown when another parallel device is running at a slightly higher voltage.

Thinking about this some more, I'm wondering if you rely primarily on the solar charger, then use a smart trickle charger that would detect if the voltage dropped, then take over supplying a charge to the battery.

Will need a 'smart' trickle charger possibly something like THIS.

I would still diode sum though.

I didn't see the reason he wants off solar.

The only reason I could think somebody would do this is the solar is overcharging the battery, cooking it constantly. Other than that the diode OR circuit would be my choice.

A settable voltage on a trickle charger would be required to keep the battery level at a good float voltage for long life.
