I need to switch on something off a 12v trigger, the switch in there now is 15A so the manfacture recomended a 15A relay.
I found the small Elk ones but they are only 5 amps. Anyone know where I can get a good 12V realy that can handel 120v 15Amp. I figured it should be easy to find but so far no luck.

Are you looking for a complete solution in a box that is UL listed? If so head on down to your local electrical distributor and pick up a commercial/industrial relay. Some of them trigger on 12V, much easier to find if you trigger on 24VAC.

Elk used to make something that could be controlled by contact closure(ELK 9100) or X10 and came in a box, two different relays, but discontinued it for something cheaper. You may be able to find it around.

If you are looking for a relay that you can mount in a socket, solder to, etc, there are many. Look for a good electrical parts store or just head to radio shack if you are in a hurry and want to pay for it, they usually have a few in back.

Finally, most triggered outlets for home audio operate on 12VDC and can switch 15A via an outlet. You could use the outlet or take it apart.

Try looking for a RIB(Relay in a box). Sounds like they are exactly what you are loking for. I am using some for my pool lights with an Elk controling them. They are great.....

You might look into a SSR (solid state relay). They can easily handle the current you''re talking about and be triggered by 3-32 vdc (typically). They're also silent ;)

See: http://cgi.ebay.com/Opto-22-240D25-Solid-S...p3286.m20.l1116

You may find much better prices if you search around.

Silent and DON'T wear out. a normal relay typically will get 1-2 million relay clicks/clacks before it dies. With a SSR, it doesn't wear out. BUT you'll pay for it. They are typically 5x more in cost.

You just need to pick the RIGHT product for what you are trying to do.

Programmergeek,

I have a NIB Opto22 240D25 you can have for $10 including shipping (Paypal preferred) if it will serve your purpose. I believe it is a 3-32vdc control and 25 amp rating on the 120v side. It is is equal to a SPST (no) relay.

Just a FYI I use some of the Cyrdoms at work, and they have specific AC and DC units. and they dont switch unless there is a load on them.

I also use a similar product (Omron) Todd. You are correct in the fact that you need a load on them to switch.

Don't know what you mean by "specific AC and DC units". This one is rated for a large AC output and has a wide input (DC) control voltage range of 3-32 volts. It is also totally silent.

Sorry Yes they all are DC controllable, but the output switching is different for AC or DC loads (and no they wont just work Ive tried that :) )
