VidaBox has announced the immediate availability of their new iPad Mini mount.  The mount will cost less than $100, and makes the smaller iPad even more interesting for home automation use.

I have been thinking about doing this for one of my android tablets.  I think it comes out to around 30-40 for a precut frame with the same materials.  Of course you have to get the measurements right and cushion the channel if you want and cut the hole for the cord.

With the cheap price of the Nexus 7 while maintaining high quality, I gotta admit I don't understand the whole "permanently mount a WiFi device" approach. The only place I'd personally mount a touchscreen would be in the kitchen and wake it up on a doorbell ring with the front door camera, otherwise I wouldn't even have permanent touchscreens anywhere.

And heck, my kitchen touchscreen has been physically turned off. Front door camera is rarely used while we're in the house, and we always have either our cellphones, my Nexus 7, kids Nexus 7, or wife's iPad nearby.

I did have to redo my screens to deal with the changing use case, that sucked.

As someone who installed a $1k+ in-wall PC (stupid, I know, but this was before iPads were available, and it was the cheapest & safest in-wall solution on the market), a mount like this, plus a 'cheap' iPad Mini is a lot more economical.

That said, I personally love the LaunchPort mount, it allows you to keep using the iPad, and it's all magnetic/inductive.  I might go that route once they come out with a version for the iPad Mini.

The LaunchPort is certainly interesting. May be, too advanced for its time - as is usual with many home automation pioneering products. I have a Nexus 4 with a flat (horizontal) inductive charger on my side table and the official Nexus charger (diagonal for easy reading) on my desk, and I'm extremely happy with it. Since they are standard based (Qi), I can match and mix. I cannot wait to see the standard evolved so that it can support the higher currents retired by tablets. And of course, to see it implemented in my favorite tablet brand (Nexus).
