You can't control low voltage halogens that use a transformer.

Yes, you can. There are two types of transformers used in these low voltage systems - Electronic and Magnetic.

Magnetic transformer cause no issues at all.

Some electronic transformers though might cause issues. Because the electronic transformers are much cheaper, sometimes the transformers will cause noise to be injected on the powerline. If it does generate noise, you need to install a filter between the switch and the fixture.
