I came across these capacitive water flow switches online, which look promising as they basically clip onto non metallic water pipe and provide a N.O. NPN output, operating at 12-24V. I emailed the company and got a data sheet (Its 5mb so I cannot attach it here, but if your interested I'll email it to you) and some pricing (estimated around $45/ea after shipping, taxes, duties, etc.) Unfortunately there is a 50 unit minimum order. Regardless. . .

Curious to know if anyone has used anything similar, or what others use to monitor water flow. Just looking for a on/off status of flow.

Thanks,

This is interesting and I'll send you my Email addy in a PM and maybe post a summary here. I'm curious as to the resolution/accuracy for 'trip' point.

Shame about that 50 minimum order. If it seems like something Cocooners are interested in though I bet we could convince one of our fine vendor's here to stock them for us! ;)

depends on the accuracy, but the price and install is VERY attractive!

Pending looking at the specs, I'd be interested in at least two, maybe more!

Of course, you could put adapter fittings to install PVC in a section of the copper pipe where the sensor would be located.

Is this thing a "flow" sensor or a "pipe full" sensor? I see nothing in the spec sheet about flow rate. The spec sheet always talks about distance... like it was detecting the mere presence.

I've sent in a request to the manufacturer for more information as it is called a flow switch but is not clear whether it senses flow or empty pipe and flowing pipe. . . reading the data sheet again under the "I/O Circuit Diagrams" the "Liquid Level" option appears to be either "Present" or "None" so looks like you may be right. I'll post once I hear back from the manufacturer.

Looks like it is more of a level detector than flow. There are no flow accuracy specifications given. Plus notice is says mount to bypass pipes. Also it says "Sensing Liquid position: Indented mark position".

I say it is designed for sensing flow in an overflow pipe. I've never heard of capacitance being used to measure flow, only level.
