While browsing the internet, I found a company, Radiotronix.com, which offers a pretty interesting product. They have a relatively cheap wireless adapter (Wi.232DTS), which replaces RS232/422/485 serial cabling. They also implemented the physical and MAC layer of the ISO network model.
Now if this confuses you, it basically means that this adapter supports higher level protocols such as TCP/IP. The Wi.232DTS module is perfect for home automation, automated meter reading and RFID, as it provides support for long range applications (<1500ft Line of Sight) and can run on a single AA battery for 2 years!
