You do have to do it through a telephone so you'll get marginal at best audio quality. For best results with the onboard, I recommend using a phone with a separate handset and using something like this to play sounds directly from an audio device into the phone - that'll be much better quality than using the phone's handset.
Otherwise what I ended up doing was using an Elk 124 (With the Elk129 computer interface module) so I could record high-quality recordings off my computer, and hooked that inline with the Elk's speaker output; this gets me high quality audio through my elk keypad speakers for things like doorbell, holiday jingles, creepy halloween sounds, custom door sounds, etc. A little spendy but well worth it.
