death of QAM thread over on sage forums

this is great since i just bought the HVR-2250... dual HD QAM tuners....guess i'll have a new paperweight soon...

Me thinks cable companies and OEM offering full systems give better X-mass presents to the legislators than Hauppage...

Comcast finished their roll-out of dta's here and as a result their unencrypted qam offerings dropped to almost nothing, at least nothing but what I could already get ota. I moved to Verizon, not because they're any better, they're not, but they didn't lie to me and tell me my brand new qam tuner equipped TV's would work with their system. Comcast lied to me and they're gone.

I am shocked that anyone is surprised that Comcast encrypts all but the local channels. I had always figured they would do that. Lets hope SageTV supports cablecards down the road.

yeah..the cable cards are the holy grail i guess...but for the time being only certified OEM front to back DRM'ed systems i heard.

Strange how this TV biz is going all DRM whereas iTunes was that way for years and is now moving away from it.

some sort of STB controlled by the cable company that decrypts the encrypted channels...another way to make our life difficult.

Digital Transmission Adapter is what the acronym I think

Not for long:

End Customers Can Now Add Digital Cable Tuners With CableCARD to Their PCs

Microsoft and CableLabs announced that customers will now be able to add digital cable tuners with CableCARD to a Windows 7-based PC with Windows Media Center. A new tool will be provided by Microsoft that assesses the PC's ability to support the solution. This tool will analyze the customer's PC and enable digital cable support if the PC meets requirements, opening digital cable options to Windows Media Center customers across the country. Microsoft also announced that, with Windows 7, it has increased the number of TV tuners that can be connected to the PC from two to four per tuner type, thereby allowing customers to simultaneously record or watch as many as four digital cable TV channels.

"We are excited that digital cable customers will now be able to take advantage of this new opportunity to bring great cable TV programming to the PC," said So Vang, vice president of OpenCable at CableLabs. "We are dedicated to helping customers get the most from their cable service, and this will be a great win for both the customer and the cable operators."

Thanks MavRic. I have a local cable provider and I'm wondering how much longer I'll be able to stay on the old analog cable. This works well for me as I watch mostly OTA high def and the QAM high def. All good things must come to an end though. When that does happen it'll be time to move over to satellite service for me.

Yeah, It sucks if you were on Comcast. But we all knew that was a gravy trail that was going to end sooner rather than later.

QAM iteslf isn't dead, but Comcast is simply going the way of every other cable provider out there and encrypting their non-local QAM stations.

grr....I am not quite ready i have my server upgraded to W7 yet...lol..

No news from Comcast in my area about encrypting...so who knows..

My LCD TV has a QAM tuner in it and I have Comcast; in South East CT.
Did a rescan today and some new channels where found. All starting in the 200 range. Like my analog 8 was now also on 208-1. Low def and all.
So I would say it is starting here in CT.

On the Comcast web site it mentioned a converter for basic users that was I believe free.

That's the way it started here too. I just got "the letter" today. I think I may be done with cable. They aren't giving me many reasons to stay.
