I got a keypad, according to the instruction booklet, I'd need a 6 wire cable, but unfortunately the cable guy ran a 4 wire cable, can I still connect the keypad to the controller? sorry for a silly question, since I am learning.
Attached is a diagram for the Elk keypad. The keypad connector is 6 wires and the wiring back to the panel is 4 wires such that I am guessing you are OK with it.
Note that the extra wires to the 6 pin connector on keypad are used for:
1 - optional programmable output from keypad.
2 - optional programmable zone input from keypad.
The M1 data bus only needs 4 wires, as the diagram in Pete's post above shows.
The data bus can have two branches, and everything on each branch must be wired in a daisy chain fashion. There are diagrams in the Elk Installation Manual that show how to do this. Using 6-wire cables would allow you to have all the keypads and other devices wired as home runs.
If you have just one or two data bus devices (e.g. 2 keypads and no input/output expanders), then it is no problem. But if you have more than two devices to connect, then you either need to wire up a daisy chain, with a cable from one device to the next, or use the Elk M1DBHR to retrofit to the 4-wire cables.
Thank you Pete and Ral very much.
Ral, I was thinking of getting 2 keypads, since it is pre-wired, I think it is hard for me to wire up a daisy chain as you suggested, the only option left for me is to use Elk M1DBHR, I shall definitely look into it.
really much appreciated once again both of you.
Cheers
