I just got word that Elk launched a self contained security system. Looks pretty neat!
Elk Products, Inc. launches self-contained, wireless security system. ElkGuardTM has built-in siren, motion detector, and GSM Cellular Communicator and operates up to 3 months without AC power. It supports up to 23 additional wireless sensors. Ideal for construction sites, homes without land lines, apartments/dorms, marinas/boats, mobile structures, and more.

For more information visit www.elkguard.com or contact Charley Hall at 800-797-9355 ext.10010

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this.

Are there any more details, like expected availability, expected MSRP or service pricing and dealer programs for monitoring?

Availability is now. Contact ELK sales 800-797-9355 for all the details.

Due to the 3 month run time between charges on the battery, the ElkGuard has turned out to be very attractive to construction sites. ELK will be offering solar recharging to keep the battery constantly recharged in the near future.

Spanky,
Neat product. I have gotten questions over the years on how to secure remote sites that this product seems to fit right in.

Any means for the remote site to send info to the ELK M1 in the primary residence as a "remote zone"? So that the HA system can react to that as it does to local zone issues? If not possible that way, via Internet email to a software based HA system (like MainLobby)?

Any high level, put us into the ballpark cost estimates? Realizing that this appears to be a dealer only product - or will it be available direct from ELK? Monthly GSM charges - a ballpark quote? ie: somewhere from $10 - 20 per month.

The ElkGuard sends alarm information via GSM to the backend server which relays the alarm to the dealers central station of choice. Emails may also be sent to any email address. An additional remote arming and disarming capability is available through the GSM cellular connection via the backend server webpage.

The ElkGuard is available through the Elk Distributors.

Price is more than one dollar and less than a million dollars. I can't quote prices!!

I missed this post, thanks for the bump.

Just emailed me & 1500 of my closest Neighbhorhood Watch/OPD friends about it; construction site theft has been an issue around these parts as of late...

This looks to be just the thing to help secure my sister's college apartment for a few years!
I have been in contact with a dealer about the product and can answer some questions. However, first I need to emphasize that I know little to nothing about home automation and even less about the underlying technologies, X10, Insteon, Z-wave, UPB, etc. I have named these but I don't really understand the nuances of each.

With the above disclaimer out of the way, I can offer some info on this product. The system comes with the base unit and 2 fobs for activating and deactivating the unit. It also has a built in motion detector. Everything else is ala carte. There is a monthly monitoring agreement that is lower than my phone bill. If you are willing to sign up for an extended contract, you will save significantly on the initial purchase of the hardware. You do have to have GSM phone service available, but that shouldn't be an issue unless you live way outside of East Podunk. I believe that you are able to monitor and modify your unit via the web if you have a monitoring agreement with Elk.

I haven't decided to pull the trigger yet, but if anyone would care to ask specific questions, please feel free to email me.
HTH,

This is a product that is sold through security installers.

Pricing to the end user will be set by the installer but will probably be in about the range of the M1.

We will have this on the site by this weekend.

For more details on the product, you can go to the new website Elk has created for it - www.ElkGuard.com

This looks interesting, but wouldn't there be a possibility the ElkGuard'll be vulnerable to intruders, like Visonic PowerMax+, Ademco Lynx, GE Simon 3, etc.? I didn't mean to ask the question, but I think it'll be better if there's a wireless siren for Elk Guard, so that the internal siren can be disabled and put in a secure location, such as a closet, but then with an addition to the wireless siren, wireless motion detector is required for perimeter protection.

What I mean by "vulnerable" is like if a burgler is not distracted by the siren, a burglar can find ElkGuard and destroy it and continue with their errands, steal some stuff worth valuable, and then leave their premisis...

This is not my place to be blunt, but it helps to educate beginners when it comes to installing their own security system. So, I intend to bring up the concern when it comes to all-in-one security systems and spot any weaknesses.
