Elk M1 Gold and ELK-SS30 Siren

Hello All. Can I hook an ELK-SS30 siren directly to output 2 on my Elk M1 Gold? The specs show the ELK-SS30 siren draws 1.1 amps at 13.8vdc, but the Ek M1 ouput 2 is limited to 1 amp. If I can connect it, how is it wired? There are 3 wires on the siren, but only 2 connection for output 2. Do I need to use a certain gauge wire?

Regards,

Do I win something for having a *really* challenging question? :)

You know that nobody is going to tell you, in a fire / security / life and death installation, to violate the specs. But you might put the question to Elk directly, either by email to Elk Tech Support, or by asking the question in the Dealer Forum Bulletin Board or FAQ.

To be totally safe, use an Aux output for the supply and switch it through (for example) Output 3. As for the wiring, I use 18 gauge in current-carrying applications like this. Be sure to do your Aux and total current calculations diligently.

UJ,

I'll take a stab at it. Since it appears that the SS30 siren draws more than Output 2 current rating, I would program Output 2 for power, have it pick a small burden relay (ELK-912B or similar) and get the siren power from the VAux terminals.

The three wires on the siren would be a Common, Yelp, and Steady. You decide which sound you want with the common and cap off the extra wire.

The size of the wire depends how far from the panel the siren is located. I would think that 18AWG or larger would be sufficient for a house.

Hope this helps.

I didn't think it would be this hard to connect an Elk siren to the Elk M1G. I will check with Elk to see what they say. Thanks for the replies.

I just spoke with Elk regarding this.  The OFFICIAL answer is that output 2 is limited to 1A BUT if overdrawn it will pull the required current from the battery.  It is 100% safe to use the SS30 on output #2.
