Elk M1G new install - keypad location

I'll start installing an M1G next week (new house, some existing wiring).

Does it make sense to have an extra keypad in the wiring closet?

I would install a keypad at each ground floor point if entry, or at least run the cables to allow you to add more later. Follow the diagrams regarding type of cable, length, connections and 485 bus terminations. In my home I have two keypads which are wired back to the ELk in parallel, which both have bus termination. You can also daisy chain two keypads together, but only the last one should have the termination resistors. It all depends on which configuration is easiest to run the wires. Having an extra keypad next to the panel doesn't seem necessary given there are mobile device apps that can allow you control your Elk like eKyapad. I found the app extremely useful when connecting zones up which the app also displays the zone voltage in real time. This assumes you have the M1XEP Ethernet module.

I guess it depends on how much exercise you want to get. Try not installing a keypad near your wiring closet first, and that statement will become clearer and clearer... :)

A keypad at the panel is always nice to have. Once your system is set up, you'll find that you'll use it less and less (depending on panel location). The really nice thing is that a KP at the panel location is also the easiest one to add later if you want to.

IMHO, once you're all setup a KP at the panel is pretty much useless (unless there is specific need). If you want you can do a temp connection at the panel and them move it to it's permanent location when you're done.

Thanks for the responses. I think I will put a keypad in the wiring closet for setup, then move it out to the garage or shop.
