Elk Solution for home and shop

I have prewired my home and now I need to install the hardware but need help figuring out what hardware is necessary.

I have chosen the Elk M1G over the HAI Promo 16 due to initial and overall cost.

My home has 31 zones and then the shop has 5 zones.

I have a homerun going to the shop,2 RG6 and 2 Cat5e The two RG6 and one cat5e are going to be used for multi room audio and video so I have one left for the alarm system. Three windows and two doors

What hardware do I need that allows me to connect the shop to the M1G

Thanks for the help

Raymond

I think I would just use the Cat5e for the three windows and two doors and directly wire to the Elk or a zone expander.

You will need an Elk M1G, and a zone expander at a minimum. You may also want to use a data base hub for ease of wiring (keypads, zone expanders, etc...) There are two types of data base hubs, mostly differences are in the way you approach terminations.

FYI, you may also want to investigate glass breaks, motion detectors, and maybe even a keypad depending on what is in your shop and functionality you desire with the Elk while in there.

I definitely want to put a keypad in there. I was debating on a dual PIR motion and glassbreak to add another zone I have a wire for it but was planning on putting it later.

I am assumign that with the Elk I cna arm/disarm the shop while leaving he house unaffected.

Haven't purchased any hardware yet plan on doing it this week but wanted to make sure the Elk was the right products.

You can define multiple areas on the Elk. Areas can be armed/disarmed independently. You can also have zones assigned to a common area, such as an entrance corridor. This area will only be armed when all other areas are armed.

Can you give a bit more info on what you mean by "shop?"
For example, what temperature and humidity extremes will it see over the year, what sort of particulates might be in the air (chemicals, wood, plastics, car exhaust etc).

Unless your shop is a stand-alone building (not doubling as a garage), temperature controlled, and the hobbies you do in the shop are clean "no emission" types of hobbies, I don't think most of the sensors intended for interior residential applications can be trusted to be reliable longer term. They just were not intended for those types of environments and you might instead consider different types of commercial/industrial sensors.

Just some food for thought is all. You might not even have these types of considerations to deal with.

If Elk isn't the answer, then you should change the question :-)

If I knew the answer then I would not need the question. IF I posed a vague question like please provide a solution for my needs for the entire system I would be insulting those that are providign positive responses. I tried to do the research and found that the HAI and Elk both have the componentns included or available to do the things I need both now and in the future. Elk seems like the best financial way to go as I cna build on it as I need it but if it did not allow me to do the tasks I needed then I would have to go back to the drawing board.

The shop is a 30X28 second garage. It has a wood andmetal fabrication area and a lift for my hobby car. Some painting is done in there as well as a lot of chassis fabrication. The current sensors are hardwired window and door magnetic switches. The additional wire for the PIR is just a wire placed in an area that would be suitable for one.

Based on one of the responses it sounds like I can put a small box in the shop and then have an expansion board in it. Then wire that back to the main processor via the cat5e cable. Then just treat them as zones in a common area. I guess the next thing I need to understand is how to hook up the board and the controller using one cat5e cable back to the main processor so I can still use the other wires or I will have to drop another wire and now that it is rocked it becomes a little more tedious. The documenation online has some examples but not very detailed.
Thanks for the help everyone.

I believe my solution will be:

M1G
2 DBHubs
3 KPA1s
2 Arming Stations
4 Zone Expanders
2 Sirens

Then add a Databas Hub in the main panel
Hookup another database hub to the main dbhub via cat5e in the shop. then I can add a zone expander and a keypad to the dbhub in the shop and treat them as separate zones. Will allow me to put some additional components for motion glass, and contacts.

A single Cat5e cable will handle the data bus to the shop up to 4000'. You may want to use a separate power supply in the shop, though. Even using both extra pairs of the Cat5e, the current-carrying capacity might not handle the load.

Given the sorts of chemicals one finds in a shop environment, not to mention the value of the hobby car, you might want a smoke detector and/or a thermal sensor in addition to the intrusion sensors.
