Harmony 880 button problem

Well after a few years it looks like my Harmony 880 is experiencing the 'volume up' button failure. Has anyone seen this problem and taken theirs apart to fix? Worse case I will remap it to another button. I can't afford a Harmony One at the moment.

I haven't experienced that yet with my 880, but to forewarn you there is a common problem with the battery swelling and causing the battery cover to break off. My just did that and Logitech has the covers and batteries on backorder from what I have read.. Seems to be a common and widespread problem with the Harmony 880s. Next time I catch a Harmony One on sale, the 880 is going to the bedroom.

How about this one: my daughter dropped the 890 on the hardwood today and now shows the BSOD. Can't restart it or have the PC see it. I'm looking for a 900 or 1100 since I need RF.

I have been noticing my harmony 880 has not been responding to commonly used buttons like vol up and channel up. When I think to I look and see if the little IR transmit icon is lit when pushing the buttons, it's not. This issue has been showing up unless I press the buttons more firmly. I'm guessing that it is a mechanical failure within the remote.

It has gotten to the point to where I am consciously surfing the channels in the opposite direction than I usually go.

It seems like these universal remotes are garbage. I had a pronto neo and it lasted about 2 to 3 years (hard button failure) and them I purchased the 880 and now it's failing.

It it really worth $400 to get a 900 ($300 at B&H Photo)? I would like to have the RF as I am now distributing video and audio to a different room.

I just don't know if I want to "rent" a remote for $100 a year.

I am very good with equipment in general. The remotes don't get abused at all. It's a shame, the remotes that came with some of my older TV's and other equipment (before using universal remotes) still have no problems to this day.

I also have some issues with things that I am hearing...Apparently the 900 doesn't have some of the functionality that the older 890 and 880 has as far as control goes. I still have to do some more research on this one as some of the posts I have read elsewhere were a little bit older.

The last thing I want to do is drop another chunk of cash on a new remote to find that it doesn't do that simple little thing that the old remote did.
I have to get more details on this one.

If anyone else knows about this please post up!

Fortunately there is the up and down arrows in the middle of the 880 that you can remap it to, temporarily.

Here are some other people having some of the many problems with harmony remotes: Search "volume" on the page.

After reading the post on Oct 12, 2009, I'm not sure I am buying another Harmony remote again, at this point.

Apparently if you call harmony they'll give you a 50% coupon of some sort to by a new one from their site.

Already got a response from them about the 50% off.... problem is that makes it about the same as buying one from Amazon so that is not much of a deal. Besides like you I hesitate to buy a Harmony One with some of the problems I have read about them.

Guess I need to look at other computer based programmable remotes.

For now I remapped the volume till I can get time to open it up.
