I was doing a little research when I saw this link popup in google. www.openrf.com Their google ad said they were an alternative to Z-Wave. When I watched the demo video they seem to be heading in the exact same direction as z-wave. Their site still lacks some much needed information but it may be something worth watching over the next few years.

That stuff is over my head but someone may have good input.

OpenRF does not enforce particular operational profiles and makes no attempt to ensure interoperability.

This sounds like it will turn into a big mess of proprietary implementations.
